Conflict-free gemstones: Sustainability in the jewelry industry

Sustainability is a major topic—and the jewelry industry is no exception. More and more people are looking beyond the sparkle of gemstones and questioning the ethical and ecological impact of this sector. From mining to retail, a gemstone often embarks on a complex journey, fraught with challenges related to labor, human rights, and environmental protection.

It’s no surprise, then, that conflict-free gemstones and sustainable production methods are becoming increasingly sought after.

We spoke with jewelry designer Isabella Kubitza (*Wienimalism*) from Vienna about the topic of sustainability in the jewelry industry and take a closer look at this important issue.

Contributing a piece of the mosaic to change

“Metals and gemstones have become indispensable to humans, yet their extraction has been associated with numerous ethical and environmental issues for decades,” says Isabella Kubitza. Mining, for example, leads to deforestation, water pollution, and soil erosion—threatening entire ecosystems.

Additionally, miners in some parts of the world still work under unsafe conditions for low wages. Children are also exploited for hazardous and low-paying tasks—an alarming reality that is only slowly changing.

“Choosing conflict-free gemstones contributes, at least in a small way, to preventing further deterioration of the situation while supporting ethical practices, safer working conditions, and fair wages,” explains the jewelry designer.

Good for the environment, good for us humans

But what exactly does “conflict-free gemstone” mean? “Well, such stones often come from companies that prioritize sustainability,” explains the Vienna-based designer. Many of these companies focus on responsible mining methods that reduce water consumption, lower emissions, and restore mining sites after extraction.

This is crucial, as consumers are increasingly valuing sustainability, transparency, and environmental responsibility—even when it comes to jewelry.

Lab-Grown, Sustainable Gemstones

“Then there are companies that grow gemstones in laboratories, eliminating the need for mining entirely and significantly reducing the ecological footprint. This is an innovative approach, especially in a time when sustainability and ethical consumption are becoming increasingly important,” explains Isabella Kubitza.

Lab-grown gemstones, also known as synthetic gemstones, are created under controlled conditions in a laboratory. Unlike artificial stones, which only mimic the appearance of natural gems, lab-grown gemstones contain the same chemical elements and have the same physical structure as their natural counterparts. This means that a lab-created sapphire has the same hardness, brilliance, and optical properties as a natural sapphire—the only difference is its origin.

Regional and sustainable: the Mevisto philosophy

We at Mevisto have also chosen this path—our sustainable sapphires and rubies are created right here in Austria, in the heart of the Traunviertel region.

But that’s not all: We also rely on regional partners from the surrounding area, whom we personally know and appreciate, as well as a photovoltaic system that powers our hydrogen generator, providing the energy needed for our gemstone production.

These and other small and large sustainability initiatives make us not only agile and adaptable but also reinforce our core belief: We have great respect for life.

Most importantly, our sapphires and rubies hold an invaluable emotional significance. The uniqueness, the appreciation, the closeness—you can feel it when wearing one of these stones. These are not “empty” gemstones without character; they are deeply personal pieces that represent a profound connection—whether chosen for engagement rings, wedding bands, or as a cherished remembrance of a loved one.

On the way to a brighter future

Jewelry designer Isabella Kubitza summarizes: “The demand for conflict-free, sustainable gemstones is more than just a trend—more and more people are actively seeking products that align with their values. In response, jewelry brands are focusing on sustainability, increasing transparency, and committing to responsible sourcing practices. And that’s a good thing, because this shift benefits not only consumers—it strengthens communities, promotes fair labor practices, and contributes to environmental protection.”

She is convinced: “By continuing to question the origins of raw materials, supporting ethical jewelry designers, and demanding transparency, the jewelry industry will evolve—into a space where beauty and responsibility shine together.” And at Mevisto, we wholeheartedly share this view.
